Starting Counseling
How Long Does Couples Counseling Take?
We cannot honestly name the number of sessions you will need before we meet you. What we can explain is how the work is paced, what tends to make it shorter or longer, and how you keep track of where things stand. Sessions are 50 minutes, weekly to start, and spaced further apart as things steady.

There is no fixed number
Couples counseling here does not run on a fixed program or a set number of sessions. Pacing is set with you. Our approach is Gottman informed and cognitive behavioral, and the aim is a plan you can both follow rather than endless conversation. The length follows from what you are working on and how things are moving, not from a calendar picked in advance. If you are still deciding whether to start, our guide to signs it may be time for marriage counseling may help.
How sessions are paced
Each session is 50 minutes. Meeting weekly at the start gives you a chance to try something at home and talk it through while it is still fresh. You usually leave with one or two specific things to try before the next session, so the week in between matters as much as the session itself.
As things steady, sessions are spaced further apart. That is intentional. What you are after is a marriage that runs better, not a permanent counseling appointment, so the plan from the start is to need us less over time.
What tends to shape the length
No one can tell you the length in advance, but a few things tend to shape it:
- How long the pattern has been running. Resentment that has built for years takes longer to unwind than a shorter stretch of it, which is part of why coming in before things reach a crisis is easier work.
- What you are working on. Pre marital counseling is a short, focused series, typically four to six sessions.
- Whether trust has been broken. Work after an affair or a long pattern of secrecy is slower than other counseling.
- What happens between sessions. Trying the things you leave with, even imperfectly, gives the next session something real to work with.
Checking progress every few sessions
Every few sessions, we pause to review what has shifted, what has stayed stuck and whether the focus is still the right one. If something is not working, we say so and change it. You are not left to guess whether the time is paying off.
At any point, you should be able to answer two questions. What are we working on? And why? If either answer starts to feel fuzzy, bring it up. A clear answer keeps the work pointed in a direction you both agree on.
Knowing when to meet less often
In marriage counseling, the aims are practical: fewer blowups, faster repair and conversations that actually reach a decision. If you begin to notice those things at home, that is a natural time to talk about meeting less often. That decision is made with you, not for you, and it can happen gradually.
Planning for time and cost
McNeer Group is self pay and out of network, so it is reasonable to think about cost alongside time. Fees are listed in full on our rates page. We also offer a limited number of reduced fee spots; if cost is a concern, say so when you write. If you plan to seek reimbursement from your insurance company, we provide the paperwork you need, and you can request it after any session.
If a weekly drive is the hard part, online sessions by secure video cost the same as in person and work anywhere in Texas, as long as you are physically in the state during the session. You can join from the same room or from two different places.
Questions
Common questions
Can you tell us how many sessions we will need?
Not at the start, and we would rather be honest than guess. By the end of the first session, you hear back a plain description of the pattern and a sense of what the next few sessions will focus on. From there, the pace is set with you and reviewed as you go, based on what is changing.
What can we do between sessions to keep things moving?
Start with the one or two things you leave with, and treat them as practice rather than a test. If a conversation goes sideways, a short, sincere return to it an hour later counts. Notice what happened and bring it to the next session, because real moments from your week give the work something to build on.
Is it a bad sign if counseling takes longer than we expected?
Not necessarily. Length tends to reflect how long the pattern has been running and what you are working on, not how hard you are trying. What matters more is that you can still say what you are working on and why, and that the focus gets reviewed regularly so time is not spent drifting.
