Counseling When Divorce Is Not on the Table
March 24, 2026/4 min read/Kathryn McNeer, LPC
There is a persistent idea that counseling is the last stop before an attorney. In practice, a large share of the couples we see are nowhere near that.
They are competent people with good jobs and good children who have slowly drifted into managing a household together rather than being married to each other.
Coming in early is easier work
Ten years of accumulated resentment takes longer to unwind than two. Couples who come in while they still like each other tend to move quickly, because the goodwill needed for change is already there.
What early work looks like
It is often unglamorous and highly effective: protecting a weekly hour together, learning how to bring up a complaint without an indictment, deciding out loud how money and time get allocated.
You do not need a crisis to justify an appointment. Wanting it to be better is enough.
