What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session
May 7, 2026/4 min read/Austin Dupree, M.Ed., LPC
Most people are nervous walking in. That is normal, and it usually fades in the first ten minutes. Here is what actually happens.
Before you arrive
You complete intake paperwork ahead of time so the session itself is not spent on forms. Sessions are held at 4514 Cole Avenue, Suite 200 in Dallas, or online if you are located in Texas.
The session itself
Both partners get uninterrupted time to say why they are here and what they want to be different. Then we look at the history: how you met, what the good years looked like, when things shifted.
You will be asked direct questions. You will not be asked to relive every past argument in detail. That is rarely useful.
What you leave with
An initial read on what is happening between you, a sense of what the work will focus on, and usually one specific thing to try before the next appointment. If the fit is not right, we will say so and help you find someone better suited.
